William Miller (historian)

William Miller (born December 8, 1864 in Wigton , England , † October 23, 1945 in Durban , South Africa ) was an English private scholar who worked as a historian , medievalist and journalist .

Life

Miller was the son of a mine owner in Cumberland, Northern England . He attended rugby school and studied at Oxford University , where he graduated with honors. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1889, but he never practiced this profession, he was able to live on his private fortune. In 1895 he married Ada Mary Wright and left London with his wife in 1903 . The appointment to the first chair for modern Greek and Byzantine history at the London University he refused in the following period.

From 1909 to 1923 Miller worked as a correspondent for the conservative English newspaper Morning Post in Rome . After the fascists came to power under Benito Mussolini , he went to Athens as a correspondent . There he was associated with the British School at Athens as an honorary student until the German invasion of Greece in 1941 .

Miller was a contributor to Cambridge Medieval History until she was hired in 1937 . In 1941 he moved to South Africa, where he lived until his death in 1945. His wife survived him by four years. The couple had no children.

Miller was a Fellow of the British Academy (1932), an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens and a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens .
