William Mundy (composer)

William Mundy (* around 1529 possibly in London , † around 1591 ) was an English church musician and the father of the musician John Mundy .

Life

William Mundy became a member of the Westminster Abbey Choir in 1543 . He later worked for various parishes until he finally became a member of the Chapel Royal in 1564 , where he remained until his death. According to a family tree established by his grandson Stephen Mundy in the seventeenth century, William Mundy was married to Mary Alcock and had two sons with her, one the later composer John Mundy and the other Stephen Mundy, who was at court with James I and later with Charles I. was active.

William Mundy wrote both English and Latin church music, including several services and anthems . For some of the works ascribed to him it is not clear whether they were written by him or by a son, John Mundy.
