William Orlando Smith

William Orlando Smith (born June 13, 1859 in Reynoldsville , Jefferson County , Pennsylvania , †  May 12, 1932 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1907 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Smith attended the public schools of his home country and then completed an apprenticeship in the printing trade. In the following years he worked in the printing and newspaper industry. From 1876 to 1879 he published the Reynoldsville Herald newspaper. He then worked in the Federal Printing Office in Washington, DC until 1884. He then moved to Punxsutawney , Pennsylvania, where he published two newspapers. He also published a newspaper in Bradford . Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . From 1889 to 1898 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives .

In the 1902 congressional election , Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington in the 27th  constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded Democrat Joseph C. Sibley on March 4, 1903 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1907 . In 1906 he renounced another candidacy. After serving in the US House of Representatives, Smith returned to the newspaper industry in Punxsutawney. He died in Cleveland on May 12, 1932 and was buried in Punxsutawney.
