William Pepperell Montague
William Pepperell Montague (born November 11, 1873 in Chelsea , Massachusetts , † August 1, 1953 in New York City , New York ) was an American philosopher .
Montague taught as a professor at Columbia University since 1920 . Influenced by Josiah Royce and close to idealistic personalism, he became the leading exponent of American neo-realism . He tried to unite knowledge and belief in a "spiritualistic" and "animistic" materialism. In his opinion, philosophy has the task of shaping reality.
