William Plunkett Maclay
William Plunkett Maclay (born August 23, 1774 in Northumberland County , Province of Pennsylvania , † September 2, 1842 in Milroy , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1816 and 1821 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Plunkett Maclay was the son of Samuel Maclay (1741-1811), who represented the state of Pennsylvania in both chambers of Congress , and a nephew of the US Senator of the same name, William Maclay (1737-1804). He attended the public schools in his home country. Between 1808 and 1814 he held the office of prothonotary in Mifflin County . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . He also served as an MP in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives .
After the resignation of MP Thomas Burnside , Maclay was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , at the by-election due in the ninth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on October 8, 1816. After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1821. In 1820 he renounced another candidacy. After serving in the US House of Representatives, Maclay worked in land surveying as well as in agriculture. In 1837 he was a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state in Harrisburg . He died on September 2, 1842 in Milroy, where he was also buried.
