Thomas Burnside

Thomas Burnside (born July 28, 1782 in Newtownstewart , County Tyrone , Ireland , †  March 25, 1851 in Germantown , Pennsylvania ) was an American lawyer and politician . In 1815 and 1816 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1793, Thomas Burnside came to Norristown , Pennsylvania from his home in Northern Ireland with his father's family . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1804, he began to work in this profession in Bellefonte . On January 12, 1809, he was appointed Deputy Attorney General . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In 1811 and 1812 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate .

After the death of MP David Bard , Burnside was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , at the by-election due in the ninth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on October 10, 1815. He stayed there but only a few months until his resignation in April 1816. His resignation came after his appointment as judge in the judicial district of Lucerne County . He held this office until 1819. Then he was again a member and in 1823 chairman of the State Senate. From 1826 until his death he held various judicial posts in Pennsylvania. From 1845 he was associate judge at the local Supreme Court . Thomas Burnside died on March 25, 1851 in Germantown near Philadelphia and was buried in Bellefonte.
