William R. Miller

William R. Miller (* 27. June 1947 ) is an American psychologist , emeritus professor of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque , and together with Stephen Rollnick founder of motivational interviewing ( motivational interviewing ).

Life

After studying psychology and clinical psychology , Miller received his doctorate in 1976 from the University of Oregon as a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. ). In addition to teaching, he conducted research at the Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions (CASAA) in Albuquerque. Based on his experience in addiction research, he worked closely with Stephen Rollnick to develop the motivational interviewing method , which was originally designed solely for the therapeutic treatment of addicts.
