William Sidney Mount

William Sidney Mount (born November 26, 1807 in Setauket , Long Island , † November 19, 1868 there ) was an American painter of the 19th century . He was primarily a portrait painter and belonged to the current of the Hudson River School .

life and work

William Sidney Mount was born in Setauket on Long Island in 1807 . He was apprenticed to his brother Henry Mount, a sign painter, in New York City from 1825 to 1827 . From 1826 he graduated from the National Academy of Design and from 1829 he worked as a portrait painter in New York. In 1831 he was elected an Associate Member ( ANA ) and a year later a full member ( NA ) of the National Academy.

In 1836 he moved to Stony Brook on Long Island and stayed there until the end of his life in 1868, dedicating himself to the rural scenes of his homeland as a genre painter .
