William Thomas Reid

William Thomas Reid (born October 4, 1907 near Grand Saline , Texas , † October 14, 1977 in Austin , Texas) was an American mathematician .

Life and career

Reid attended college at Simmons (now Hardin-Simmons) University in Abilene, Texas . He received his Master of Arts and PhD (1929) from the University of Texas at Austin . From 1929 to 1931 he was a National Research Fellow and then a faculty member at the University of Chicago until 1944 . During World War II, he served as a math advisor to the Army Air Corps . Reid was a math professor at Northwestern University (1944-1959), at the University of Iowa (1959-1964) and finally at the University of Oklahoma (1964-1976).

Reid's research fields were differential equations , the calculus of variations and the theory of optimal control . The Reidsche inequality , an inequality from the operator theory is connected with his name.

William Thomas Reid died on October 14, 1977 while visiting the University of Texas at Austin.
