William Whittingham

William Whittingham (* around 1524 in Chester , † June 10, 1579 in Durham ) was an English reformer and Calvinist theologian .

Life

William Whittingham studied at Oxford and fled from Queen Maria I Tudor to Frankfurt am Main , where he befriended John Knox . He remained with Knox in Geneva , but he returned in 1560 after England back to 1563 Dean of Durham Cathedral to be. Whittingham was a Calvinist and suffered attacks from the Archbishop of York . Whittingham's greatest achievement was the publication of the Geneva Bible (1560); a collaborative effort in which he was the driving force.
