history

The Gamecocks enter the field for the theme music from 2001: A Space Odyssey

The Richland County facility was built as Columbia Municipal Stadium in 1934 with the help of the Works Progress Administration . Originally it offered space for 17,600 spectators. In 1941 it was transferred to the University of South Carolina and renamed Carolina Stadium .

A curve of the stadium was upgraded with a tier during the 1940s, giving the stadium a horseshoe shape . The capacity was almost doubled to 34,000. More than a decade later, the grandstand ring was finally closed and could now accommodate 43,000 spectators.

The first major renovations were carried out in 1970, whereby the natural turf was also replaced by an artificial turf . Two years later, an upper deck was added on the west side, increasing the audience capacity to 54,000. These expansions were made possible by funding from Martha Williams-Brice , whose husband played football for the Gamecocks from 1922 to 1924. In her honor, the venue was renamed Williams-Brice Stadium on September 8, 1972 .

In 1982 an upper deck was added on the east side and the capacity increased further to 72,400. During the 1982/83 season, at the insistence of new coach Joe Morrison, the artificial turf was finally replaced by a natural turf.

Over the past ten years, renovations and expansions have been carried out on the system for around 30 million US dollars, increasing the capacity to the current 80,250 audience seats.

Events

In addition to the home games of the Gamecocks, there are also many concerts in the Williams-Brice Stadium. Mention should be made of the joint concert by Metallica and Guns n 'Roses on September 7, 1992 and U2's concert on September 23 of the same year as part of their Zoo TV tour . Paul McCartney and his band gave a concert on May 7, 1993 and on September 25, 1994 The Rolling Stones performed as part of their Voodoo Lounge Tour .

In addition, Pope John Paul II spoke here in 1987 in front of 60,000 people.
