Willie Monroe Jr. (* 17th December 1986 in Rochester , New York , USA ) is an American boxer in the middleweight division . He is trained by Danny Akers .

Amateur career

Among the amateurs, the southpaw won gold at both the Empire Games and the New York Golden Gloves . In 2007 he took part in the Golden Gloves tournament and made it to the semi-finals. There he had to admit defeat to Shawn Porter 5-0 on points.

Professional career

Monroe made his professional debut in 2008 when he defeated his compatriot Erix Quinteros, who also made his professional debut, with a technical knockout in the 3rd round in a 4-round fight.

In 2014, he earned the vacant WBO - NABO and WBA - NABA belts when he beat Brandon Adams on points in a fight. He defended these two titles the following year against Brian Vera with a point win.

On May 16, 2015, Monroe competed against Gennadi Golowkin for the WBA World Championship and was knocked out in round 6 Already the following year, Monroe reported back with unanimous points victories against his compatriots John Thompson and Gabriel Rosado .
