The Willow Creek (English for " willow river") is an approximately 180 km long left tributary of the Oldman River in the southwest of the Canadian province of Alberta .

River course

Willow Creek rises on the eastern edge of the Canadian Rockies , 7 km east of Mount Burke , at an altitude of 1720  m . Willow Creek initially flows southeast through the mountains. After 25 km he reaches the Chain Lakes Reservoir . The Chain Lakes Provincial Park is also located there . The Willow Creek now flows in an easterly direction through the foreland of the Rocky Mountains. It now shows a strongly meandering behavior up to its mouth . After another 55 km the river reaches a weir where a canal branches off to the nearby Pine Coulee Reservoir . Below the weir is Willow Creek Provincial Park . The river runs below the dam and turns south-southeast. An irrigation canal crosses the river 35 km above the mouth. After another 3 miles, Alberta Highway 2 crosses the river. Eventually the river reaches the Oldman River. The estuary is 6 km northeast of Fort Macleod .

Hydrology

The catchment area of Willow Creek covers approximately 2520 km². The mean discharge at the gauge 31 km above the mouth near Nolan is 5.9 m³ / s. The highest mean monthly discharges occur in May and June with 11.3 and 15.2 m³ / s respectively.
