Wilhelm "Wim" Hospelt (born May 17, 1951 in Cologne ; † October 15, 2019 ) was a German ice hockey player . He was one of the founders of the Cologne EC - "Die Haie" .

Career

Wim Hospelt began playing ice hockey at the then largest ice hockey club in Cologne, the Cologne Ice Club (KEK). There he went through all youth teams as a striker and in 1969 made his first appearances for the professional team, which was playing in the Bundesliga for the first time at that time . However, they rose again in the 1969/70 season and played in the league until 1972 , which was the second highest division at the time.

In 1972 Hospelt was one of the founders of the Cologne EC - "Die Haie" (KEC), which was founded out of the ice hockey department that was split off from the KEK. In the first season of the new club he managed to get promoted back to the Bundesliga with the Haien. There Hospelt was one of the top performers until 1978 and achieved its first championship title with the KEC in the 1976/77 season . He then played for Duisburger SC in the Bundesliga for a few years , but he was unable to win any further titles. In 1982 he ended his active career after a year in the second division.

Wim Hospelt has also played for the German national team at several world championships. He was a youth coach at the KEC and a member of the traditional KEC team. Together with other former athletes, he kept returning to the ice at tournaments and events. He died after a serious illness in October 2019 at the age of 68. His son Kai also played in the DEL for the Kölner Haie.
