The Windows Admin Center (formerly also known under the code name Project Honolulu is known) an administration program for Microsoft Windows and Windows Server - Operating Systems that simplify their management, and to make more central. The admin center should be available for servers from version Windows Server 2012 and for client computers from version Windows 10 . In order for Windows Server 2012 to be managed and to be able to use the PowerShell functions that are not included in these versions of the operating system, the Microsoft Windows Management Framework (WMF) Version 5 or higher must be installed.

The center, which displays a web-based graphical user interface , is opened via the Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome Internet browser . It enables the user to access the server via remote maintenance .

Functions

Windows Admin Center is intended to support the user in administrative tasks such as troubleshooting , configuration and maintenance . The functions in the center include:

In addition to the graphical user interface, you can also work with PowerShell . Well-known programs such as Hyper-V , Windows Active Directory , the registry editor , the Azure cloud service or the Windows firewall are used . The functions are shown as individual modules. In addition, individual functions can be supplemented with extensions . Since a server administrator does not transfer any data in the HTML5 interface, he also works more securely than with other solutions.

history

Microsoft introduced the graphical user interface for Windows Server on September 14, 2017 , which was codenamed Project Honululu. It was officially presented at a press conference at Microsoft Ignite 2017 in Orlando .

The center was introduced because the Powershell was not enough for system administrators and Windows Server lacks a good user interface that is quick and easy to use and brings everything together centrally. Windows Admin Center is based on the Microsoft Management Console (MMC for short), which was first introduced in Windows 2000 .

On April 12, 2018, the project left the test phase and was named Windows Admin Center.
