The Königshovener Höhe wind farm is located in the urban area of Bedburg in the Rhein-Erft district . It was built in two construction phases on 345 hectares of recultivated area of ​​the Garzweiler opencast mine and has been fully operational since the end of 2015.

After the contract between the city of Bedburg and RWE for the purchase of the shares in the project planning company was concluded in December 2013, construction of the first 12 plants began in February 2014. The location was designated by the city of Bedburg as a concentration zone for wind power in the zoning plan. The first construction phase has an installed capacity of 38 MW. The official groundbreaking for the first construction phase was on March 31, 2014. The first system went into operation at the beginning of October 2014, and by the end of the year all 12 systems of the first construction phase had been completed.

The second construction phase began with the groundbreaking on April 17, 2015; individual preparatory work was carried out in November 2014. The nine additional systems have been in trial operation since the beginning of October 2015; regular operation began at the end of 2015.

A total of 110 million euros was invested in the entire project. The wind farm was officially opened on February 24, 2016 with a ceremony in the presence of the North Rhine-Westphalian Environment Minister Johannes Remmel .

The city of Bedburg has a 49% stake in the wind farm, while Innogy SE holds 51% of the shares. Bedburg expects additional income of around 800,000 euros per year.

In 2015, 140,000 megawatt hours of electricity were generated. The systems should show more than 3000 full load hours. In terms of figures, 58,000 households would be supplied with the electricity.

Expansion of the wind farm

In January 2019, the city of Bedburg and Innogy SE announced the first plans to expand the wind farm. Initially, five more plants with a nominal output of 4.5 MW each were to be built. Three areas in the area of Autobahn 44n are planned as a construction site . The wind turbines would be 2.4 to 3.6 kilometers from the nearest residential area.

A new wind farm is also planned in the immediate vicinity in the urban area of ​​Jüchen along the A44n ( Jüchen A44n wind farm ), which should go into operation in 2021.

Technical specifications

The 21 structurally identical Senvion 3.2M114 wind turbines have a hub height of 143 m and a total height of 200 m. Overall, they have an installed capacity of 67.2  MW .
