Winfried Garscha

Winfried R. Garscha (born May 4, 1952 in Linz ) is an Austrian historian .

Garscha studied after the matriculation examination in 1972 at the High School Krems history, Slavic and German studies at the University of Vienna and in 1982 at Erika Weinzierl about "continuity and change German Anschluss propaganda and harmonization efforts before and after the Nazis, seized power '' to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1993/94 he completed the training course of the Austrian National Library and the Austrian Society for Documentation and Information for Documentaries in the Non-Public Area. He then held teaching positions at various universities.

Since 1988 he has been working part-time at the Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW) in Vienna . In addition to working in the archives, he is also in charge of research projects, including topics such as “How Austrian post-war society deals with Nazi crimes” or “German-Austrian relations before 1938 and after 1945”. Another focus of his research was the history of the KPÖ and the labor movement in the First Republic ; a topic on which he published the books "Vienna 1927. Menetekel für die Republik" 1987 and "February 1934 in Austria" 1984. He is the co-author of many articles in magazines and anthologies and co-editor of the book “Keine 'Abrechnung'. Nazi Crimes, Justice and Society in Europe after 1945 ”(in collaboration with Claudia Kuretsidis-Haider). He is also the scientific co-head of the “Central Austrian Research Center for Post-War Justice”.

In 1990 he was awarded the Victor-Adler State Prize for the History of Social Movements and in 2002 the Willy and Helga Sales-Verlon Prize of the Documentation Archive of Austrian Resistance. In 2017 he was awarded the Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class .
