Winspit is an old lime - stone quarry near Worth Matravers on the Isle of Purbeck in the county of Dorset on the south coast of England . No more rock is extracted in this quarry .

Winspit is located just south of Worth Matravers on the English Channel , a little northeast of St Alban's Head (St Aldhelms Head) and about 6 kilometers southwest of Swanage .

A stretch of coastline stretches from Orcombe Point near Exmouth in the west to the Isle of Purbeck in the east, which was the first natural landscape in England to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO . Winspit is part of this Jurassic Coast , it is one of the natural wonders of the world and is known for its fossils .

Until around 1940, Winspit served as a quarry for the production of Purbeck stone for larger buildings in London. During the Second World War, the site was a radar location for sea and air defense. After the war, the underground quarry was opened to the public.
