The port of Žirmūnai ( Žirmūnų uostas ; winter port Žirmūnai , Žirmūnų žiemos uostas ) is a river port on the Neris in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius , in the Žirmūnai district , on the Neries gatvė .
history
In the 1920s, a Polish entrepreneur set up the port in Žirmūnai. In Soviet Lithuania , a hangar for ships and remont work was built on the bank. Four ships (" Ryga ", " Kijevas ", " Taškentas " and " Salomėja Nėris ") were used for ferry travel. After Lithuania regained independence, "Salomėja Nėris" was sold as scrap metal . "Kijevas" was renamed to "Vilnius" and "Taškentas" to " Talinas ". Later these two ships were no longer needed and auctioned off as scrap. After that only "Ryga" remained.
In 2008 the municipality of Vilnius decided to prepare the planning documents for the port of Žirmūnai. It is foreseen that the port will serve passengers on the Neris tourist waterway from the Verkiai Regional Park to the Lazdynai Bridge . The total value of the project works is 1.35 million litas (0.35 million euros ). Almost 87 percent (1.17 million litas) come from the structural funds of the EU and the Lithuanian government . The Vilnius Municipality will fund 177,000 litas.
