The Winterkasten is a 383.7 m high mountain on the northern outskirts of Bad Salzungen in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .
The winter box is located in the Salzunger Werrabergland between the moorland and the Werra valley . The mountain belongs partly to the districts of Bad Salzungen, Oberrohn and Graefen-Nitzendorf . At the summit, a Dreiherrenstein marks the former border point. An imperial linden tree was planted nearby as a memorial tree. The mountain has been reforested with conifers since the late 19th century, before the mountain forest had been the fuel supplier for the Salzunger Saline for centuries.
