The Magellanic Winter Bark ( Drimys winteri ), also called Canelo , is a species of the Drimys genus within the Winteraceae family .

Vegetative characteristics

The Magellanic Winter Bark is a slender, evergreen tree that reaches heights of up to 20 meters. Its bark is soft, gray-brown and strongly aromatic.

The alternate leaves arranged on the branches are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is relatively short. The leathery, simple leaf blade is elongated-oval to broad-lanceolate with a length of up to 20 centimeters with a mostly rounded upper end. The top of the leaf is shiny, light green and the underside of the leaf is whitish.

Generative characteristics

About ten flowers stand together in a shingled inflorescence . The fragrant and hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry with a diameter of about 4 centimeters . The sepals are reddish. The 4 to 20 flowers petals are off-white and at its base a little yellow. Each flower contains a multitude of stamens and four or more free carpels .

The berries turn bluish when ripe.

Occurrence

Drimys winteri occurs in Chile and Argentina . In the Chilean coastal evergreen forests, Drimys winteri is a dominant tree species.

The first publication of Drimys winteri was in 1775 by Johann Reinhold Forster and Georg Forster in Characteres Generum Plantarum , 84, Table 42. synonyms for Drimys winteri J.R.Forst. & G.Forst. are Drimys chilensis DC. , Drimys granatensis Mutis ex L. f. , Drimys punctata Lam. , Drimys winteri var. Andina Reiche , Drimys winteri var. Chilensis (DC.) A.Gray , Drimys winteri var. Morenonis Kuntze , Drimys winteri var. Punctata (Lam.) DC. , Drimys winteri var. Quinoensis Kuntze .

Name declaration

The specific epithet winteri probably honors John Winter, Vice-Admiral and captain of the ship Elizabeth during Drake's circumnavigation of the world from 1577 to 1580, although nothing is stated in the first publication by the Forsters. Winter used the bark of this type of plant against scurvy . Therefore, the name winter bark does not refer to the winter season, but to this person.
