The Seattle economic area is the center of the American Northwest and is of far-reaching importance as a future-oriented business location. The city serves as the headquarters of several global companies. The aerospace industry and information technology are one of the focal points.

history

The beginnings

Gold digger camp in Yukon during the Klondike gold rush

Founded in 1851 as a marine near lumberjack settlement, provided the timber industry in the early early years Seattle's most important industry. After a growth reduction due to a US economic crisis in the early 90s of the 19th century saw the city from 1897 through the Klondike Gold Rush a population leap, was additionally reinforced by the settler trains and the railway line of the Northern Pacific Railroad from Portland to Seattle, which was laid in 1893 . Seattle was an important base for prospectors on their way to the prospecting areas, and so the population here grew from 3,500 to 230,000 between 1880 and 1910, of which the period from 1900 to 1910 alone accounted for an increase of approx. 150,000. During this boom phase, several companies that still exist today, such as UPS , Nordstrom and Eddie Bauer, emerged .

1900-1950

The gold rush was followed by the heyday of shipbuilding in Seattle in the early 20th century . This development was reinforced by the two world wars, as the shipping industry produced many war and merchant ships. The wood industry, which continues to be important, also benefited from shipbuilding. During the World Wars Seattle was a key naval base of the Navy and many soldiers were shipped to the war zones over the city's harbor. The Second World War also gave Boeing , Seattle's best known and most important industrial company, a good start. Founded in 1916 as "Pacific Aero Products Co." Boeing received numerous orders to build heavy bombers and fighter jets during the war.

After the war, Boeing had to cancel a large number of war-related and not yet executed orders. However, the company quickly recovered by converting the former war aircraft into civil aircraft. With the emergence of civil aviation, Boeing quickly became the largest employer in the region. After a serious crisis in civil aviation in the early 1970s, Boeing reduced the workforce in the Seattle area from 80,400 at the beginning of 1970 to 37,200 at the end of 1971. Since Seattle had hardly any vacancies in other industries due to its heavy dependence on Boeing, many residents left the city. This "inspired" two real estate agents to put up the now famous sign on a main road in Seattle: "Will the last person leaving Seattle - turn out the lights" (in German: "The last person to leave Seattle, please turn off the lights") .

In the years that followed, civil aviation recovered from its crisis and the situation at Boeing improved again. Boeing moved its headquarters from Seattle to Chicago in 2001 , but the manufacturing facilities around Seattle remained unaffected.

In the course of the 1980s and especially the beginning of the 1990s, Seattle experienced another boom phase due to the global triumph of the computer. This is particularly linked to Microsoft , which has a market share of around 87 percent in operating systems for home computers (as of 2000). Other companies in the New Economy that were founded in Seattle or have or had their headquarters there are Amazon.com , aQuantive , Getty Images or Real Networks .

With Cray and AT&T Wireless (previously Cingular Wireless ) or T-Mobile USA, there are other telecommunications or computer companies that are based in Seattle.

outlook

The economic future of Seattle is generally assessed positively, for example Microsoft is planning a new construction of parts of the company premises in Redmond , in which 7,000-15,000 workers are to be employed. In addition, other global corporations such as the coffee house chain Starbucks , Washington Mutual , Costco Wholesale and Nintendo of America represent a guarantee for further growth. The economic situation of Seattle becomes clear when the average household income of the greater Seattle area is compared with the national average. In Seattle, that value reaches $ 68,094, while in Washington state it is $ 54,921 and the national average is $ 49,252. The average household in Seattle has an income 28.1% higher than in Washington state and even 46.3% more money than the national average in the USA . The Puget Sound region is now the largest per capita exporter in the United States, making it an important part of combating America's foreign trade deficit . Seattle's favorable ocean location has resulted in the Port of Seattle today becoming a major trading hub for trade with Alaska, China and Japan.
