Wittmann Island is an island off the west of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . In the Biscoe Islands archipelago , it is 3 km west-southwest of Nusser Island in front of the entrance to Zubov Bay on Renaud Island .
The island was first shown on an Argentine map from 1957. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named them in 1959 after the American oceanographer Walter I. Wittmann (1918-1992), whose main focus was sea ice research .
