Wizard101 is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by KingsIsle Entertainment . The player takes on the role of a young magic student and travels through the spiral, the fictional world of this game. As with many role-playing games , the fights are turn-based. The next attacks are planned and selected using magic cards.

Game flow

The spiral is divided into different worlds. At the beginning the player is in the world of Wizard City. As the game progresses, it is possible to unlock further worlds. This depends on the progress of the main story of the respective world or the level of the player. So far thirteen main worlds are accessible in the game, which would be there (in order of their playability): Wizard City , Krokotopia , Marleybone , MuHong , Drachenfels , Celestia , Zafaria , Avalon , Azteka , Khrysalis (1) , Khrysalis (2), Polaris, Mirage and Empyrea . Furthermore, four worlds are available, but they are not relevant for the main story and are therefore optionally playable. In order of their accessibility these are: Grizzleheim , Wysteria , Aquila (which is an extension of the Wizard City game world) and Wintergrimm . In addition, once you have made a certain progress in Polaris, you unlock the Arcanum. This is the headquarters later in the game. As an additional challenge, there is also the four dungeons , which can be reached with different levels depending on the dungeon. The four dungeons are (in order of playability) Kembaalung, Barkingham Palace, the Halls of the Scales and Düstermoor Castle.

The aim of the game is to play through all worlds and to reach the maximum level. In order to achieve this, the player has various options to improve his skills. You have to find good equipment, fight for it, buy it for gold or buy it for real money in the in-game crown shop. In addition, the player has the opportunity to breed a pet that will support him in battle after previous training. Here, too, there is the possibility of finding this animal or buying it for fictional or real money. Wizard101 is designed for a young playgroup, but is also very popular with adults.

Payment model

The game was designed as a free-to-play game. When the game was released, it was possible to play the game almost completely free of charge, with minor exceptions. But with the rising costs associated with translation into different languages, Gameforge decided to make most of the game world only accessible against payment. So it is necessary to buy the fictitious currency kroner via your own portal or to take out a monthly subscription. It is also possible to use this currency to purchase better equipment and mounts.

development

Wizard101 began development in 2005, right after KingsIsle Entertainment was founded under the direction of J. Todd Coleman . The game went into beta on August 6, 2008 and was made publicly available on September 2, 2008. On December 15, 2010, the game went into beta in Europe and was officially released in February 2011 in cooperation with Gameforge . In Taiwan, the game started on April 27, 2012.

success

On an unknown date, 40 million players were reached on the American servers. The MMORPG has also received several awards, including from Massively Overpowered and MMORPG.com .
