Wladimir Rochlin (numerist)
Vladimir Rochlin (born August 4, 1952 in Voronezh ) is an American mathematician of Russian origin who deals with numerical mathematics and partial differential equations .
Life
Rochlin is the son of the mathematician Wladimir Abramowitsch Rochlin . In 1973 he graduated from Vilnius University and then worked from 1973 to 1976 at the Leningrad Institute of Arctic Geology. From 1976 to 1985 he worked at Exxon in Houston , Texas. In 1983 he received his doctorate from Rice University under John Dennis ( Integral equations approach to scattering problems ). From 1985 he worked at Yale University , where he is now a professor of mathematics and computer science.
Rochlin and his doctoral student Leslie Greengard succeeded in inventing the "Fast Multipole Method" (FMM, or the Fast Multipole Algorithm), which enabled a considerable acceleration of the numerical solution of the Laplace equation and how it has numerous applications in physics and engineering.
He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences . In 2001 he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize with Greengard . In 1994 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich (Analysis based fast numerical algorithms of applied mathematics). In 2016 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
