Wojciech Polak (born December 22, 1964 in Inowroclaw , Poland ) is Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of the Catholic Church in Poland.

Life

Wojciech Polak attended the seminary in Gniezno and studied theology in Poznan . On 13 May 1989 he was the Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw, Józef Cardinal Glemp , the priest consecrated. He was then sent to Rome to study at the Accademia Alfonsiana , where he specialized in moral theology . He was charged with a dissertation about sin and forgiveness in the church teaching of the Second Vatican Council doctorate .

In 1995 he received a teaching position in moral theology at the seminary in Gnesen, and in 1999 he took over its leadership. He also taught at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan . Pope John Paul II appointed him on April 8, 2003 auxiliary bishop in Gniezno and titular bishop of Mons in Numidia . The Archbishop of Gniezno, Henryk Muszynski , donated him episcopal ordination on May 4th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Stanisław Gądecki , Archbishop of Poznan , and Bogdan Józef Wojtuś , Auxiliary Bishop of Gniezno.

In 2011 he was elected General Secretary of the Polish Bishops' Conference, in which he also heads the working group for contacts with the Russian Orthodox Church . He advocated a thorough investigation of sexual abuse by priests and asked the victims for forgiveness on behalf of the Church.

On May 17, 2014, it was announced that Pope Francis had appointed him to succeed the previous Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate Józef Kowalczyk , who had reached the age of 75. The inauguration took place on June 7, 2014.
