Stanisław Andrzej Gądecki (born October 19, 1949 in Strzelno ) is a Polish clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Poznan .

Life

The Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw and Primate of Poland , Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski , ordained him a priest on June 9, 1973 . He is a biblical scholar and has taught Old Testament exegesis.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Rubicon and auxiliary bishop in Gniezno on February 1, 1992 . He was ordained bishop by the Polish primate, Józef Cardinal Glemp , on March 25 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Bogdan Józef Wojtuś , auxiliary bishop in Gniezno, and Gerard Bernacki , auxiliary bishop in Katowice . He chose Opere et Veritate as his motto .

On March 28, 2002, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Poznan . On March 12, 2014 he was elected chairman of the Polish Bishops' Conference.

Pope Francis appointed Stanisław Gądecki to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on May 28, 2014 .

In January 2016, Bishop Gadecki appealed to the parishes in the Archdiocese of Poznan to accept refugees. He criticized attacks on foreigners and refugees as “sick nationalism”: love for one's own country should not be expressed in xenophobia.

On October 8, 2016, he was elected Vice-President of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences.
