Juliusz Paetz (born February 2, 1935 in Posen , † November 15, 2019 in Pleszew ) was Archbishop of Posen .

Life

Juliusz Paetz studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the seminary in Poznan, at the Catholic University of Lublin , at the Pontifical Gregorian University and at the Angelicum in Rome . On 28 June 1959 he received in the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Poznan, Archbishop Antoni Baraniak the priesthood . From 1969 to 1976 he worked in the parish pastoral and from 1976 in the secretariat of the Synod of Bishops in Rome, as an employee of the Vatican State Secretariat , he was a delegate in the permanent working group for contacts with the government of the People's Republic of China and Popes Paul VI there. , John Paul I and John Paul II directly subordinated.

Bishop of Łomża and Archbishop of Poznan

On December 20, 1982, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Łomża and on January 6, 1983 he was ordained bishop in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Co-consecrators were the official in the Vatican State Secretariat, Archbishop Eduardo Martínez Somalo and the secretary in the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Archbishop Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy .

On April 11, 1996 he was appointed Archbishop of Poznan by John Paul II and on April 23, 1996 he was introduced to his diocese. He received the pallium of the Metropolitan on July 29, 1996 from the hands of the Pope.

Allegations of abuse

He was suspended from the Poznan Seminary in 2002 for sexual assault . A commission of inquiry appointed by the Vatican found the allegations confirmed in autumn 2001. He never pleaded guilty to himself; the case was never solved; the prosecution never investigated the case further.

In June 2010 the media reported that Paetz had been rehabilitated by the Congregation of Bishops. The Vatican rejected this as wrong. It is only a matter of Paetz being allowed to celebrate public masses again in the future, but still having to obtain the consent of the responsible bishop. Nonetheless, Juliusz Paetz has appeared as a concelebrant at many religious ceremonies over the years. It was not until 2016 that the Vatican once again suggested a life in secret. Juliusz Paetz last lived in the house of the Magda Sisters in Pleszew . In consultation with the Holy See and the Apostolic Nunciature in Poland and the family, he was buried in his parents' grave. This also corresponds to the will of the deceased archbishop.
