Jerzy Stroba

Jerzy Stroba (born December 17, 1919 in Świętochłowice (Ger. Schwientochlowitz ); † May 12, 1999 in Posen ) was a Polish Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Posen .

Life

Stroba was ordained a priest on December 19, 1942 in Breslau . From 1943–1945 and 1950–1952 he worked as a vicar in the parish pastoral in Chorzów . From 1949 to 1952 he worked as an editor of the Catholic weekly newspaper "Gość Niedzielny" ( Sunday guest ). He received his PhD from the Jagiellonian University Theological Faculty in Cracow . In the years 1955-1958 he was rector of the Silesian Seminary in Cracow and lecturer in dogmatic theology at the Theological Academy in Cracow.

On July 4, 1958, he was by Pope Pius XII. appointed titular bishop of Aradus and auxiliary bishop in Gorzów . On November 16, 1958, he was ordained a bishop by Antoni Baraniak . On June 28, 1972 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed diocesan bishop of the newly established diocese of Stettin-Cammin . The introduction to the office in the Szczecin Cathedral took place on October 8, 1972. On September 21, 1978 he was appointed Archbishop of Poznan by Pope John Paul I and introduced on November 12, 1978 in the Poznan Cathedral . He had retired on April 12, 1996 .

Stroba was chairman of the Catechetical Commission (from 1958) and then (from 1974) a member of the Main Council of the Polish Bishops' Conference . From 1974–1983 he was Deputy Chairman of the Council of the European Bishops' Conference , member of the Pontifical Catechism Commission (1987–1992) and member of the Pontifical Concordat Commission (1992–1993).

His funeral took place on May 15, 1999 in the archbishopric basilica of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Poznan. His body rests in the bishop's crypt.
