The Wolf Center is about 5.2 hectares large wildlife park in the Lower Saxon village Dörverden in the district of Verden , which was mainly the wolves dedicated. It opened on April 28, 2010.

The Wolf Center is located in the village of Barme , which is part of Dörverden, on part of the site belonging to the former Lower Saxony barracks . The barracks were cleared by the Bundeswehr in early September 2003.

The wildlife park has an exhibition area in which a permanent exhibition designed by Universum Bremen can be seen, a second exhibition area, the so-called time tunnel, in which the visitor can stroll in the Aller-Leine Valley for the past 15,000 years, and a wooded outdoor area several enclosures.

The permanent exhibition is divided into five subject areas:

Fascination Wolf - senses, performance, biology,
Among wolves - population, communication, rearing,
Hunted by wolves - nutrition, prey, hunting behavior,
Wolves and people - wolf stories, wolf hunting, wolf management,
From wolf to dog - wolf diversity, domestication, breeding.

In the outside area there are three enclosures in which several wolves live, an approximately 3500 m² sheep enclosure with forest sheep and a herd guard dog . An enclosure that was previously inhabited by two Czechoslovakian wolf dogs is currently no longer used. There is also a sheep pen, a goat pen and a prairie dog pen, two playgrounds and an Indian village with tipis where visitors can stay overnight. Overnight stays are also possible in rooms and in the tree house hotel of the Wolfcenter.

The two wolf enclosures each have an observation platform.

Idea and goal

The investor and operating couple came up with the idea of setting up the Wolf Center in 2005 on a trip to Canada, where they visited a similar Wolf Center.

The Wolf Center wants to bring the population closer to the wolf, which has been exterminated in Germany at the latest since the beginning of the 20th century and which has re-immigrated mainly from Eastern Europe since the 1990s and which is now under protection. To find this u. a. Lectures, guided tours and feedings take place, which together with the enclosures and the exhibition areas are intended to provide comprehensive information about behavior, social structures, habitat, hunting and the protection of wolves.

Wolf sanctuary

Since December 2016, the Wolf Center has been recognized as the second wolf sanctuary in Lower Saxony alongside the Lüneburg Heath Wildlife Park .
