The Wolfenbütteler Buchspiegel is a device for retro-digitizing sensitive books such as incunabula and codices . Thanks to a small opening angle of 45 °, the book cover is particularly gentle on the recording compared to other devices such as the book cradle or the Graz book table . The Wolfenbüttel book mirror was developed at the Herzog August Library in cooperation with the companies Kaiser Photo Technology and Image Engineering Dietmar Wüller .

The basis of the Wolfenbüttel book mirror is a V-shaped book cradle to hold the book. For the recording, a V-shaped construction made of glass plate (to smooth the book page) and the mirror opposite is moved from above into the opened book. Since the small opening angle of the book prevents the image from being taken directly, the mirror image is photographed. In the case of digital photographs or scans , a subsequent mirroring of the digital copy is possible without loss.
