Wolfgang Alt (born June 17, 1947 in Hilden ) is a German university professor and professor of mathematics and theoretical biology at the University of Bonn .

Live and act

Wolfgang Alt made his Abitur in 1966 at the Helmholtz-Gymnasium Hilden . From 1966 to 1971 he studied philosophy, mathematics and physics at the University of Göttingen . In 1971 he received a diploma in mathematics from the Mathematical Institute in Göttingen, and in 1973 he received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Münster . From 1973 to 1981 he was a research assistant , first at the University of Münster, then at the Institute for Applied Mathematics at the University of Heidelberg . From 1975 to 1985 he specialized in cell biology at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg. 1980 followed his habilitation in mathematics with a paper on "Chemotaxis-Systeme".

From 1981 to 1986 he was a Heisenberg fellow. From 1982 to 1983 he was Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Utah (Salt Lake City, USA). From 1979 to 1986 he was a co-founder and member of the SFB 123 “Stochastic Mathematical Models” at the University of Heidelberg and at the German Cancer Research Center. Since 1986 he has been professor and head of the interdisciplinary department "Theoretical Biology" in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty of the University of Bonn. In October 1990, together with Gottfried Jetschke from the University of Jena , he organized the biomathematics contact seminar on the Leuchtenburg near Jena . After the fall of the Berlin Wall , young biomathematists from the old and new federal states were able to get to know each other there for the first time and present their work to each other. The biomathematics contact seminar took place several times in various German locations until 1998.

The current research areas of Wolfgang Alt are mathematical modeling and simulation of intracellular polymer dynamics, cell adhesion and cell movement, cooperative movement and swarm behavior.

Alt is the brother of the mathematician Hans Wilhelm Alt , with whom he has also published several specialist articles.

At the same time, Wolfgang Alt is also chairman of the Poppelsdorf History Association . In several books he documented the historical development of the Poppelsdorf Palace and the Botanical Garden .
