Wolfgang Beck (chemist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Maximilian Beck (born May 5, 1932 in Munich ) is a German chemist ( inorganic chemistry , organometallic chemistry , complex chemistry ) and lecturer at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Beck received his doctorate in 1960 under Walter Hieber at the Technical University of Munich ( on the structure of some metal carbonyl and nitrosyl compounds ) and completed his habilitation in 1963 at the Technical University of Munich. From 1968 he was a full professor of inorganic and analytical chemistry at the University of Munich. In 2000 he was retired.

In 1977 he was visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison .

He dealt with pseudo- halogeno metal compounds (fulminates, azides), metal complexes with biologically important ligands (amino acids, peptides, sugars, nucleobases, quinine), organometallic Lewis acids and complexes with hydrocarbon bridges. He dealt with platinum complexes as chemotherapeutic agents against cancer and with metal-mediated synthesis of oligopeptides and cyclotetrapeptides . He wrote around 650 essays. He is the co-author of high school chemistry textbooks and has supervised over 130 doctoral students.

In 1994 he received the Liebig Memorial Medal from the Society of German Chemists and in 1967 the Chemistry Prize from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 2002 he was awarded the Lavoisier Medal for Organic Biometallic Chemistry in Paris (which was first awarded to him). In 2011 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Munich (Dr. hc).
