Wolfgang Bleibel studied classical saxophone with Werner Böckmann in Münster and jazz saxophone with Karlheinz Miklin in Graz and Herb Geller in Hamburg.

The multi-woodwind player has been working as a jazz and studio musician since the late 1970s. During this time he was a guest in the NDR and later also the WDR Big Band , often as 1st alto saxophonist. Between 1987 and 1995 Wolfgang Bleibel taught classical saxophone at the music academies in Detmold / Münster and Bremen. Since 1994 he has been professor of jazz saxophone at the Institute for Jazz at the "Franz Liszt" University of Music in Weimar, of which he has been director since 2006.

In 2006 and 2013 he played duo concerts with the French jazz pianist Martial Solal . Since 1993 he has been in a duo / trio with the jazz pianist Sebastian Altekamp and the Portuguese jazz singer Maria de Fátima , an ensemble in which he also appears as a composer. This formation has released three CDs so far (2013) under the name Songlines .

His particular interest in the connection between classical music and jazz led to the creation of the composition Elf Bilder von Edvard Munch by Jörg Achim Keller in 2005 . The world premiere of this work in March 2007 with Bleibel as soloist on alto saxophone and the Hessischer Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jim McNeely attracted attention.

He can also be heard on CD and radio productions as a soprano / tenor / baritone saxophonist, clarinetist, bass clarinetist and flutist.
