Wolfgang Blendinger (* 1955 in Coburg ) is Professor of Petroleum Geology at the Clausthal University of Technology . In 2000 he took over this chair. As a former chairman of the German section of ASPO (Association of the Study of Peak Oil and Gas ), he deals with the problems of global oil and gas production maximums .

Blendinger studied geology and paleontology in Würzburg and Tübingen. After receiving his PhD in 1985, he worked in the oil industry for fifteen years . In addition to his work as a professor of petroleum geology, Wolfgang Blendinger is a passionate lover of German half-timbered construction, which is why he painstakingly restored a half-timbered farm in his homeland, the Swabian Alb . Despite his ambitious and time-consuming restoration project, his university educational mandate was by no means neglected.

His academic staff at Clausthal University of Technology gave him excellent support over the years of his short-term absences, so that further research projects could be advanced.

Among other things, he deals with the creation of 3D models for the spatial representation of oil and gas deposits , as well as the formation of primeval reefs and their petrographic classification.

He considers the extraction of crude oil from oil sands , oil shale and drilling in the deep sea and the polar regions to be uneconomical. Regarding the question of when the global maximum oil production would be reached, Blendinger assumed in April 2006 a point in time in the following three years. Peter Gerling, an expert at the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), once again described this view as rather pessimistic.
