Wolfgang Eckert (* 1964 in Furtwangen / Black Forest) is a German sculptor.

Life

Eckert completed an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor from 1980 to 1983. From 1989 to 1995 he studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Eduardo Paolozzi and Hans Ladner . In 1994 he was named a master student there. Eckert set up a studio on an agricultural property outside Furtwangen in 1995. He lives there with his wife, the painter Julia Elsässer-Eckert.

Eckert's artistic field of work includes, on the one hand, the sculptural representation of people using figurative sculpture. In addition, he deals with the architecture-related design of sacred spaces.

Eckert models figurative sculptures in clay and casts them in concrete, occasionally also in bronze, using the "lost form" method. In newer plants, mixed work techniques such as concrete with applied iron oxide or concrete with applied alumina can also be found. In addition to small sculptures as well as life-size and larger-than-life figures, a portrait cycle has been created since 1994. It is a representation of people who were asked to come to portrait sessions in the studio due to everyday encounters with the artist. Starting in 2005, Eckert added a number of well-known people from public cultural life to this series of works, such as B. Marcel Reich-Ranicki (2005), Martin Walser (2006), Eugen Biser (2011) or Robert Spaemann (2012). Other portrait sculptures, including those carved in marble, were created outside of this portrait cycle in the course of commissioning, such as the bust of Sophie Scholl for the Walhalla or the portrait bust of the composer Karl-Amadeus Hartmann (1999) for the Hall of Fame in Munich. Eckert was also commissioned to portray Pope Benedict XVI. in Freiburg Minster (2011) and Klemens Maria Hofbauer (2016) for the Catholic parish church of St. Clemens in Triberg.

Eckert's second creative branch, sculptural works with reference to architecture, is primarily the design of liturgical objects in church rooms. In the search for contemporary space-art contexts, he uses a variety of materials. In addition to the materials stone, bronze and concrete, he has also been using CNC-controlled water jet techniques since 2002 by developing sculptures with contour cuts in aluminum and stainless steel. In this process, several crosses and objects were created that were used in various churches as contemporary replacements for lost historical high altars, such as B. in the Catholic Church of St. Georg in Rittersbach or the Catholic Church of St. Kilian in Berolzheim. More recent works of this kind are made up of multi-layered, heavily perforated panels that are staggered one behind the other and are also gold-plated in the background, such as B. in the Catholic Church Dachsberg-Urberg or the Catholic Church Angelbachtal.
