Wolfgang Gerhard Pollmer

Wolfgang Gerhard Pollmer (born August 21, 1926 in Wolkenstein (Ore Mountains) , † September 27, 2013 in Stuttgart ) was a German agricultural scientist and professor at the University of Hohenheim . He was one of the outstanding experts in the field of special plant breeding, especially for maize.

Live and act

Pollmer passed his Abitur after the war in Dresden in 1945 . After completing an agricultural apprenticeship from 1945 to 1948, he began studying agriculture at the Universities of Greifswald and Halle / Saale , which he completed in 1951 with a diploma. The doctorate followed in 1956 at the Technical University of Munich as an external doctoral candidate in Weihenstephan . In 1956, Pollmer came to the University of Hohenheim, initially as a research assistant at the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding. Here he also completed his habilitation in the field of plant cultivation and plant breeding in 1963. In 1967 Pollmer was appointed professor for special plant breeding. From 1960 to 1991 he was head of the maize breeding department at the State Plant Breeding Institute and built up the Eckartsweier / Rhein maize breeding facility at the university, of which he was also head until 1991. From 1971 to 1973 Pollmer was a member of the Senate of the University of Hohenheim. In 1993 he retired from active service.

Scientific achievements

In the scientific field, Pollmer has achieved sustainable and international recognition, especially for research into maize cultivation. He is the developer of 70 protected maize inbred lines which are distributed in more than 100 maize varieties in Europe and the USA.

  • 1974 to 1992 member of the board of trustees of the German Nutrition Society, the working group “Tropical and Sub-Tropical Agricultural Research” of the Federal Republic of Germany
  • 1981 to 1989 member of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Paris
  • Honorary member of the German Maize Committee .
  • The international agricultural research center CIMMYT in Mexico named the high-yielding maize variety "Pollmer" in honor of the breeder.
