Wolfgang Gersch

Wolfgang Gersch (born June 13, 1935 in Neurode , Silesia ; † February 21, 2020 in Berlin ) was a German film scholar and theater critic .

Life

Wolfgang Gersch was born in Neurode / Silesia in 1935. He studied dramaturgy at the Babelsberg Film Academy , then theater studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1960 to 1968 he was a film editor at Berliner Rundfunk , the magazine Deutsche Filmkunst and the quarterly publication 'film - Wissenschaftliche Mitteilungen', and from 1969 film historian at the Institute for Film Studies. In 1973 he received his doctorate from the Humboldt University and was a lecturer at the University of Film and Television. From 1982 to 1990 he worked at the Institute for Aesthetics at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . From 1960 to 1985 he was also a regular theater critic for the East Berlin daily Tribüne .

In 1990 he became department head (film) in the culture ministry of the GDR government de Maizière . Between 1990 and 2000 he worked in the Federal Film Department, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media . He lived with his wife, the literary translator Christel Gersch, in Berlin-Pankow ; they have two children. The son Tilman Gersch is a theater director and artistic director.

Wolfgang Gersch died on February 21, 2020 in Berlin.

Wolfgang Gersch has written reviews, essays, books, and radio features. He gave numerous lectures and readings at home and abroad. He has co-wrote documentary films, a. a. 'Die Mit-Arbeitererin' (Elisabeth Hauptmann) by Karlheinz Mund .
