Wolfgang Giloi

Wolfgang K. Giloi (born October 1, 1930 in Sobernheim ; † May 31, 2009 in Berlin ) was a German computer scientist. He was best known for his research on computer architecture .

Life

Wolfgang Giloi studied electrical engineering at the TH Stuttgart until 1957 and received his doctorate there in 1960. After working as a development engineer and head of the computer center at AEG-Telefunken , he received a 1965 reputation as a professor at the Technical University of Berlin and became head of the Institute for Information Processing. From 1971 to 1977 he was Professor of Computer Science at the University of Minnesota and briefly worked at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken in 1972 and 1974 .

He then returned to the TU Berlin, where he founded the Research Institute for Computer Architecture and Software Technology (FIRST) in 1983 , of which he was director until his retirement in 1996. Together with Ulrich Trottenberg , he played a key role in the development of the SUPRENUM parallel computer .

Giloi was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. In 2003 he received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Darmstadt .
