Athletic career

The Central Sports Association (ZSG) Union Halle started in 1949/50 as Eastern Zone Master in the first season of the newly founded Eastern Zone League (later DS League, GDR Oberliga). The 25-year-old Wolfgang Horter was also part of the team. He was used as a striker in all 26 league games and with his twelve goals was the second best goalscorer in Halle behind Herbert Rappsilber . The ZSG could not defend their championship title and only landed fifth in the so-called DS league at the end of the season. In the 1950/51 season, too, the Halle residents, who now competed as the Turbine company sports association , only came in sixth place. The season lasted 34 game days, of which Horter played 31 games. Used again in the attack, he came to 19 goals and was the best shooter of his team. He was also appointed to the state selection of Saxony-Anhalt , with which he reached the final of the state cup (1: 2 against Saxony). Turbine Halle won its second post-war championship in the 1951/52 season. Horter was only involved with two point games and one goal. He only played the first two games of the season for the BSG Turbine, after which he moved to the top division competitor BSG Motor Oberschöneweide.

At the East Berlin BSG, Horter was used on the fourth league match day. He immediately introduced himself with a goal, scored a hat trick on Matchday 14 and scored nine goals in 17 consecutive league games. In January 1952, Horter joined the West Berlin club Viktoria 89. With him he played in the Berlin contract league and won the Berlin championship with Viktoria in 1955 and 1956. In the finals of the German soccer championship, he played five of the six preliminary round matches in 1955 and all six matches in the preliminary round in 1956. Viktoria remained without a win in both years, but in 1956 Horter scored his only final goal in the 1: 5 against Hamburger SV .
