Wolfgang Köppe (born April 28, 1926 in Bad Schmiedeberg ; † February 1, 2018 in Tornau ) was a German artist from the Dübener Heide , who was known in the region as a "Heidemaler".

Life

Wolfgang Köppe was born on April 28, 1926 in Bad Schmiedeberg and was already active as a teenager. His first works, which were shown in an exhibition in England in 1946, were created in English captivity. He expanded his knowledge from 1946 to 1949 as a student in England with G. Gascoin and, after his return to Germany, with artists such as Werner Tübke and Gerhard Lichtenfeld .

In addition to landscape and portrait painting ( watercolor or oil painting ), wood carving is part of the artist's diversity. He was able to present his works at numerous exhibitions in Germany and several European countries.

Sculptures, pictures and drawings

Köppe made naturalistic sculptures from the wood of the mountain ash , poplar or pine . He also made numerous paintings and drawings, for example tree studies.

In addition to painting, Wolfgang Köppe became known through the International Wood Sculpture Competition ( Lage ) "Art with Chainsaws", which he launched in 1999 . The wood sculpture competition has been held in Tornau (Dübener Heide) on the last weekend in July since 2000 and attracts several thousand visitors and an average of 30 to 40 international artists every year. The best works are awarded an artist award, an audience award and the Köppe award.

Fractals

With the "Bitterfeld Fractals" patented as Cekarol pictures, Wolfgang Köppe developed a new painting technique and became known at home and abroad with over 100 works of this kind. In the course of an experiment in the Bitterfeld Chemical Combine , chemical results were obtained that led to the new color "Cekarol". The brush, which is usually used for painting, was omitted due to the use of Cekarol paints, which coated the picture surface using a process specially developed by Köppe. The technique developed by Wolfgang Köppe became known under the name "Cekarol-Bilder" or as "Bitterfeld Fraktale". Since the fall of the Wall, the artist has held several international seminars on this subject with art students.

Wolfgang Köppe lived in Tornau , a district of Graefenhainichen in the Dübener Heide , until his death . He died on February 1, 2018 at the age of 91 in his home.
