From 1992 to 2006 he was Professor of Sociology at the Institute for Science and Technology Research at Bielefeld University , since then emeritus. After the MPI was closed in 1981, Krohn switched to the university focus on science research at Bielefeld University.

His main research interests include investigations into the social conditions of the development of modern science (especially in the 1970s, see Edgar Zilsel ), the spread of experimental practices outside of the recognized institutions of science, theories of self-organization , and the investigation of aesthetic qualities in science and technology (see: Scientific Aesthetics ).
