Wolfgang Löwe (born June 14, 1953 in Suhl ) is a former volleyball player from the GDR .

Löwe started volleyball in 1967 at the junior training center in Suhl. In 1969 he was delegated to SC Leipzig . From 1972 to 1976 he won the GDR championship title five times in a row.

At the European Junior Championships in 1971, Löwe took fourth place with the GDR selection under coach Klaus Kirchbach. Then the GDR national coach and head coach at SC Leipzig Herbert Jenter took over the further training. From 1972, Löwe was part of the GDR national team . At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Wolfgang Maibohm and Wolfgang Löwe were only two players in the GDR selection who had not already become world champions in 1970. In the 1972 Olympic final, the GDR players lost to the Japanese team and received the silver medal. With the GDR selection, Löwe took fourth place at the 1974 World Cup and seventh place at the 1975 European Championship .

During his sporting career, Löwe completed a sport degree at the DHfK and after the end of his sporting career he was employed as an instructor for sport and culture at VEB Baukombinat Leipzig.

Footnotes

  1. In the winners' lists on sport-complete for the years 1972 to 1976 there is no Wolfgang Löwe, but a Siegfried Löwe. The five championship titles of Wolfgang Löwe can be found in Volker Kluge's lexicon of athletes in the GDR , so the wrong first name in the winners' lists of sport-complete is likely to be an oversight.
