Wolfgang Leiner

Wolfgang Leiner (born October 21, 1925 in Ottenhausen ; † February 9, 2005 in Tübingen ) was a German Romance studies and literary scholar .

life and work

Leiner studied in Germersheim , Toulouse and Saarbrücken . He received his doctorate in Saarbrücken in 1955 with étude stylistique et litteraire de “Venceslas”, tragi-comédie de Jean Rotrou (Saarbrücken 1955) and habilitated there in 1961 with The Dedication Letter in French Literature 1580–1715 (Heidelberg 1965). From 1963 to 1975 he was professor of French and comparative literature at the University of Washington in Seattle, and from 1976 full professor of Romance philology at the University of Tübingen . In 1993 he retired. Leiner founded the journals Papers on French Seventeenth Century Literature and Oeuvres et critiques as well as the Biblio 17 series , the publication of which was his life's work and his passion and with which he earned a leading place among the " dix-septiémistes ". In 2003, the Académie française awarded him the Prix pour le rayonnement de la langue et de la culture française. In 1969, Leiner was a founding member of the North American Society of Seventeenth-Century French Literature (NASSCL) and from 1991 to 2002 the first president of the Center international de Rencontres sur le XVIIe siècle (CIR 17). He was married to the literary scholar Jacqueline Leiner .
