Wolfgang Luh (born August 13, 1940 in Gießen ) is a German university professor of mathematics . He is considered to be the founder of the field of universal functions in the field of approximation theory .

After receiving his doctorate in 1970 on the approximation of analytical functions by means of convergent power series and their matrix transforms and habilitation in 1974 ( on the summation of the geometric series ), he taught at the Technical University of Darmstadt from 1975 to 1980 . In 1980 he came to Trier University as one of three founding professors in the field of mathematics . From 1993 to 1995 he was dean of Faculty IV and from 1995 to 1998 chairman of the commission for the award of state graduate scholarships. In 2008 he retired.

His main research interests are function theory , universal functions, approximation theory and limitation theory .

Honors

In 2007 Luh was the first Western European to receive an honorary doctorate from the Armenian Academy of Sciences for his services in the field of approximation theory, especially in the field of universal functions.
