Figure of the Fountain of Mercury

Wolfgang Neidhardt , also Wolfgang Neidhart and Wolfgang Neidthard von Ulm (* 1575 in Ulm , † 1632 in Augsburg ) was a German bronze caster , bell and piece caster.

Neidhardt is considered to be one of the most important foundries of the early modern period. In 1597 he acquired the citizenship of the city of Augsburg and became a city caster. In this position he was responsible for the manufacture of all guns in the city and for all metalwork.

In collaboration with the sculptor Adriaen de Vries , he created the figures of the Mercury and Hercules fountain as well as the fountain youth in the box tower , the Michael group in front of the armory and the cross altar in St. Ulrich and Afra based on designs by Hans Reichle . There is also archival evidence of works for the town hall and for Augsburg patrician families.

Johann Wagner , son of a master from Nuremberg, had been employed in Frankfurt as a journeyman at Neidhardt since 1639 before he set up as a self-employed bell founder in Frankfurt .
