Wolfgang Peters (born July 3, 1948 in Schwerte ) is a former German canoe slalom athlete. From 1967 to 1973 he was three times world champion, once vice world champion and twice bronze medal winner.

Peters grew up in Schwerte and celebrated his first successes with the Schwerte canoe club . He was a total of 25 times German champion in the boat class slalom single canoe (C1) and two-person canoe (C2 team). In 1967, at the age of 19, he surprisingly won the world championship title against strong Eastern Bloc competition in Lipno ( ČSSR ) and the bronze medal with the team with Otto Stumpf and Harald Cuypers . In 1969 he repeated the individual title in Bourg St. Maurice (Savoy) and was also world champion with the team ( Reinhold Kauder / Harald Cuypers). He finished the 1971 World Championships in Merano with 4th place and a silver medal in the C1 team race with Reinhold Kauder and Harald Cuypers. He received the Silver Laurel Leaf twice for his achievements. At the 1972 Olympic Games he started as one of the favorites in the Augsburg Eiskanal , because he had lived in Augsburg since 1971, but came in 5th place, which was disappointing for him. Due to the elimination of the canoe slalom from the Olympic program (only part of the program since 1992) and his professional independence , Peters ended his international sports career in 1974. He is one of the most successful German canoeists. In 1974 he opened a sports shop in Schwerte, which he operated until 1993. His two children Violetta Oblinger-Peters (* 1977) and the younger Yves Peters are also active in canoe slalom. Since 1993 he has been a self-employed consultant for the retail sector nationwide.
