This was followed by engagements at FV Ramstein, SC Eintracht-Sportfreunde 1911 Windecken, SG Bruchköbel , SV Dersim Rüsselsheim and SV Geinsheim 07. Since he has been running a football school in Austria for a number of years, he has also been coaching at SK Jenbach, FC in recent years Achensee and since 2014 with FC Buch.

The highlight of his career was winning the 1985 DFB Cup against FC Bayern Munich when he scored the winning goal in the final. The story goes that Schäfer - whose nickname has since been "de Cup" - spent the night in bed with the trophy. His reasoning: "I'm totally drunk, but who can blame me for that?"
