Wolfgang Scheffler (art historian)

Wolfgang Scheffler (born January 25, 1902 in Braunschweig , † September 29, 1992 in Berlin ) was a German art historian .

life and work

Wolfgang Scheffler was the son of Professor Ludwig Scheffler (1866–1935) and his wife Margarete geb. Mitlacher (1868–1957). The high school graduate of the Braunschweiger Wilhelm-Gymnasium studied art history, classical archeology, German studies and history at the universities of Berlin , Munich and Göttingen . In 1925 he received his doctorate in Göttingen.

From 1927 to 1939 he was a research assistant at the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum in Kiel, where he was mainly involved in the inventory of Schleswig-Holstein's art monuments. In 1941 he became director of the Lower Silesian City Museum in Liegnitz . In 1942 he cataloged the art possessions of the writer Gerhart Hauptmann . After military service and imprisonment, he initially worked in his hometown, u. a. at the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum . From 1952 to 1957 he worked at the Kunstgutlager Schloss Celle . Until his retirement in 1967 he was employed as curator or chief curator at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin .

He also devoted himself to genealogy and researched Braunschweig goldsmith families from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
