Heinrich Brauer (art historian)

Heinrich Hartmann Brauer , nickname Heinz , (born January 12, 1900 in Heidelberg , † August 27, 1981 in Berlin ) was a German art historian .

Life

Heinrich Brauer was the son of the physician Ludolph Brauer , his sister was the art historian Elisabeth Brauer (* 1902), who married the art historian Ludwig Heinrich Heydenreich in 1935 . He studied art history in Munich, Halle, Göttingen and Hamburg , where he received his doctorate on June 9, 1928 under Erwin Panofsky . From 1928 to 1930 he was a scholarship holder at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, where he edited the catalog of Bernini's drawings with Rudolf Wittkower . From 1930 to 1934 he worked as a volunteer assistant to Gustav Pauli at the Kunsthalle Hamburg . From 1934 to 1939 he was involved in the inventory of the art monuments of Schleswig-Holstein. From 1940 he was an assistant at the National Gallery in Berlin, from 1941 to January 1946, however, in military service and in captivity. He spent the years 1948 to 1956 at the Kunstgutlager Schloss Celle , the relocation site of the Berlin museums. From 1956 he worked again at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin and retired on July 1, 1967.
